If there’s a loving God, why is there pain and suffering in the World?
Originally, there was no pain and suffering in the Garden of Eden. When God created humans, he gave them the power of choice. When Adam and Eve sinned, pain and suffering were brought into the world.
Why didn’t he create people capable only of being kind and loving?
Think of it this way. If you push a button on one of those talking Barbie dolls, and it says “I love you”, how meaningful is that? If love or goodness is programmed into you, something you have no choice about, is it really love? Real love must involve a choice. God gave people a choice, because that’s the only way they could experience love, which is the greatest value in the universe. Then people abused their freedom of choice by rejecting God and walking away from him; therefore, that’s how suffering came into the world.
Which study Bible might you recommend for me?
There are many good study Bibles, but three we heartily recommend. The Narrated Bible in Chronological Order: This Bible helps you to understand the Bible from beginning to end in the order that things happened. The gospels are together and are not repetitive. It reads more like a novel and has a daily plan for reading the Bible through in one year. The Life Application Bible: This is a more advanced study Bible. The notes on this Bible are very explanatory and show you how you can apply the Word of God to your everyday life. The Student Life Application Bible: Just like the Life Application Bible but in a more simplified format.
